The Royal Textile Academy (RTA) of Bhutan was instituted in May 2005 by Her Majesty Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck as a non-government, non-profit organization, with the aim to preserve and promote this living art, because weaving is an integral component of the culture and tradition of Bhutan.

The Royal Textile Academy will be Bhutan’s first institution that will educate the Bhutanese youth about the conservation, preservation, training, study and exhibition of the country’s textiles. The Academy will also provide in bringing about a National Centre for weaving and educating young students in textiles, fabric designs and museum studies. It will also serve as a centre for tourists, introducing the nation’s masterpiece to its visitors, while expanding the nation’s resource for cultural tourism.

It will be established as an educational centre for the training of individuals in the traditional art of weaving, thereby preserving and conserving the culture of Bhutanese Textiles. Its mission is to educate, promote and preserve Bhutanese Textiles. It aims to create International Awareness and encourage international collaboration to promote mutually beneficial exhibits and educational programs.
